Gal Meets Glam Collection // Nordstrom Try-On

Gal Meets Glam (Julia Engel), one of the bloggers I've been following forever has launched a collection of beautiful dresses, and Nordstrom in Ottawa is one of only two Nordstroms in Canada to carry the line... lucky me! Unfortunately only five styles were stocked when it launched April 20, and all are pretty similar, but I tried them all on and this is how it went...

Quick hit: The fabrics were all beautiful and felt high quality. The construction of the dresses was also quality. Fit aside, none of the styles available to try on really wowed me, but I think that's due to the more "Southern Belle" vibe that isn't really my aesthetic.

Botanical Garden Print Midi Dress (Lauren)

Size:

Verdict: Fit perfectly in the waist (mine is 26" for reference), but felt a bit large in the shoulders and bust. The puffy sleeves were a bit much for me, but overall this was my favourite of the five styles. The button detail up the front was sweet as well, and it was lined really nicely - no underwear peekaboo!

Tie Waist Satin Midi Dress

Size: 2
Verdict: I knew this one would be too voluminous just from the hanger. It's a lot of fabric and I felt (and looked) dumpy. The colour is beautiful, but this is definitely more for taller women. The fabric itself was thick and draped beautifully.

Off the Shoulder Scuba Crepe Dress (Tyler)

Size: 2
Verdict: This one was really close to being the favourite. The shape is beautiful, the colour was gorgeous (navy, also comes in pink), and I love a good off shoulder look. The fit was great too, except the bust cups were a tad small (and I am not busty!) and there isn't much "give" in the off shoulder straps; I couldn't lift my arms above around waist height, which is generally a problem. The fabric was thick and felt secure, a great thing for such a figure-hugging dress.

Floral Wallpaper Print Fit & Flare Dress (Olivia)

Size: 4
Verdict: LOL. I literally laughed out loud when I put this on. The frills are way too big (the whole dress was too big, to be honest) and the style is not even close to being "me". The smocking at the back was nice and made it easy to get into with the side zipper. The cotton felt a bit thin, but the textile itself is pretty. Just a big nope for me.

City Crepe Fit & Flare Dress

Size: 2
Verdict: This was close to being a winner too. Fit perfectly in the waist, but the arms were a little tight. The skirt was also too full, and I feel it looks rather matronly on me. The navy is a nice colour, but I wish the pink had been in stock to try. The pockets were nice though!

So there you have it - a small selection at Nordstrom Ottawa, but overall encouraging enough that I will eventually find a winner in this collection. The price point is a little high for me to get a dress that's just "okay", so I'll be patient!

Wayfair Chandelier // The Home Series

Ever since I can remember, I've wanted a chandelier. When I was a kid, I'd be dragged to Home Depot with my parents and nearly always wander off to the lighting section to stare longingly at the sparkliest chandeliers I could find. I went through a serious collage phase in my pre-teens (I guess they call this a mood board now?) and nearly all of my designs included fancy chandeliers carefully cut out of magazine.

But, alas, due to wiring limitations, low ceilings, and general ridiculousness, my dream remained just that.

And then I bought a house with 9-foot ceilings and with it came a realization that I can do whatever I want.

So I did.

I ordered this a little while ago and just this past weekend got around to installing it. I had been looking for the perfect light fixture for my living room, and thought a chandelier would be an unexpected cool look, especially since chandeliers tend to be seen more in the dining room. My friend Natalie sent me a link to this one from Wayfair, and I was immediately obsessed -- so I took a chance! This is the Grisella 9 Light Crystal Chandelier by Willa Arlo Interiors

The price on this was certainly right (under $200!) and because the hanging bits are actually plastic, it's not super heavy or fragile. The only issue I came across when installing was that the instructions are pretty vague, which ultimately led to the wires being cut too short (oops!). After some advice from a lighting store, my dad and I re-wired the fixture ourselves.

I must say, there's something very satisfying about taking something apart, fixing it, and putting it back together again. Of course, it was very stressful as well, but everything all worked out, and I learned how to re-wire a light! Once it was fixed, I went back up the ladder and fiddled around some more (vague instructions, remember) and finally got it mounted. Then, I had to attach all 72 pieces of plastic by hand...

So while the installation process was not without drama, I'm absolutely obsessed with the result. I finally have a chandelier, and it's perfect.... and maybe I feel a stronger sense of attachment to it now because of what it took to get it up on the ceiling! I mean, it's not every day you sit on the floor of your living room and re-wire a lamp by yourself! I still have quite a few other lights to replace - I've already installed new pendant lights in my kitchen, and have been collecting an assortment of glass light fixtures to put up around the house. A purposeful mismatch, but the glass keeping a common thread throughout... and of course, nothing in competition with my piece de resistance!

So this is the final look -- don't mind the rest of my living room, it's still a work in progress (that I will also be sharing on here!), but I'm loving the vibe the chandelier brings. So chic, so cool, but unexpected.
