Autumn Picks: Maybelline Dressed to Kill

Maybelline Color Show in 270 Dressed to Kill, $2.96 for .23 fl.oz

Burgundy nail polish is a huge trend for fall, and I decided to get in on it with a cheapie polish from Wal-Mart. I figured for under $3, why the heck not? That semi wishy-washy thought is pretty much the theme of this blog post. Overall, it's not a superior, or even "really good", nail polish. It's good. When paired with your trusty base and top coats, it's good. It's a solid take on burgundy, and while I wish there was a bit more depth to the colour, I'm not disappointed by it.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the formula. It had a nice texture and consistency, not too thin and runny, not too thick and gloopy. It's the Goldilocks of formulas: just. right. I'm particularly gimpy at painting with my non-dominant hand, so it's always helpful when the formula isn't conspiring against me. Dressed to Kill was opaque in two coats.

My only "real" gripe is that on day two, there's already a bit of tip wear. It's not noticeable to anybody besides myself, but it's still a little bit annoying. I just have to keep repeating "It was less than three bucks. It was less than three bucks".

Since we're talking about incredibly cheap nail polish here, I'll offer a brief aside: these Maybelline polishes are much better quality than the Essence polishes (which ring in at $1.49, review can be found here), and come in at only twice the (incredibly low) price. Essence offers a wider, more fun range of colours and are entirely decent and I definitely recommend them if you're on a budget. However, for another $1.50ish, you can get a much better formula and application, with more product.

Overall I'm giving this a solid B grade. Obviously if you can afford OPI, China Glaze, etc. every time, then good on you and go for it. But for a cheap way to keep up with each season's ever-changing nail trends, you really can't go wrong with Maybelline's Color Show range!
